Greg is one of the smartest and most forward thinking writers about the future of classical music. The situation in Detroit, to me, is emblematic of the way instrumentalists have been disempowered in our own field. Detroit musicians, promised the holy Grail of musical jobs, now find the game has entirely changed. I think symphonies need to evolve, but it’s still tough to see fellow musicians at risk for losing their jobs entirely.
